In light of the school shooting in Uvalde, and others in the past, I have given the prevention aspect considerable thought. I honestly don't believe that further erosion of the Second Amendment will have the desired result. Instead I would recommend:
Focusing on the First Amendment. I don't believe that the press should publish ANY details about the shooter or the exact number of casualties. All that does is encourage the next mentally unbalanced sociopath to try to get a higher body count for his15 minutes of fame. The public has no “need to know” every detail of the perpetrator's life. At most, all we need to know are the warning signs that were exhibited. Law enforcement should treat details of the shooter's life as classified information, no matter how much the press screams “public right to know.”
Since the Uvalde idiot posted his plan on social media 30 minutes prior to his rampage, where were the social media watchdogs? Surely this violated their vague, and rather subjective, policies on violent posts. Why didn't they notify law enforcement? Perhaps Congress needs to get involved in this, and require all social media platforms to look for this type post and notify the proper law enforcement organization.
According to experts on active shooter situations, the best defense is a trained, armed person on scene at the start of the incident. I would recommend every teacher that wants to, be trained and armed. Ed Monk, who is an expert in this area, has stated that you can expect 6 casualties per minute. Lets have county sheriffs run active shooter armed response training for all interested teachers, as is done in Utah County now. (1)
Lets spend the money and harden the schools now!
